New York Metro North Train Derailments Result In Millions In Settlement

A new report documents the heavy financial toll paid by Metro North and New York’s MTA in settlements resulting from two devastating Metro North train derailments in 2013.

Despite the legal settlements being paid, In one of these accidents, the Spuyten Duyvil crash, plaintiffs’ lawyers believe Metro-North has begun a concerted attempt to settle lawsuits to prevent the release of information about the circumstances surrounding the derailment. Federal safety investigators concluded that the train engineer fell asleep while driving the train. According to USA Today, Super-Lawyer Howard Hershenhorn believes that evidence shows that Metro-North’s parent company, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the engineer, or both knew about safety issues that might have prevented the crash. LawCash, along with the rest of the Tri-State area and the country, appreciates the trial bar’s efforts to ensure public transportation safety.
